New Haven’s Composting Infrastructure & Curbside ProgramΒ

In March 2025, New Haven was awarded a $3.3 million grant from Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to build a new food scrap diversion facility at the city’s transfer station.

This facility will power a citywide residential curbside composting program, where households will place food scraps in green compostable bags,Β  collected alongside regular trash. At the transfer station, the bags will be sorted and sent to Quantum Biopower in Southington for conversion into biogas and compost.Β

The goal?
βœ… Lower disposal costs
βœ… Reduce landfill waste
βœ… Cut methane emissions
βœ… Create renewable energy

πŸ’‘ The program is currently in development and expected to launch in 2027.

🏫 New Haven Schools Expand Sustainability Programs

New Haven Public Schools have taken a significant step forward by expanding recycling and composting across 17 schools, thanks in part to support from IKEA and a newly appointed recycling educator. Eight of those schools now participate in a composting program operated in partnership with Blue Earth Compost and Farm2X, collectively diverting over 33,000 pounds of food waste from the landfill since launching in 2023β€―

Highlights include:

  • 165 recycling bins donated by IKEA New Haven

  • In-person education and green teams coordinated by Rose Richi and Michelle Martinelli

  • Composting in schools like John Martinez and Barnard Environmental, with detailed tracking of results
